The Lord Jesus gave the disciples and all his subsequent followers marching orders to make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:18). All Christians have a missionary mandate before them. Some, however, are called to serve as full-time vocational missionaries. The Path to Being a Missionary by Ryan Robertson and Matt Bennett is a helpful guide that equips Christ-followers who aspire to serve on the field. The authors warn readers at the outset, “Aspiration is not sufficient to determine fitness, readiness, or calling to a specific vocational ministry post.” Their book, then, serves as an invitation to submit one’s hopes and dreams to the scrutiny of a process that will help evaluate and assess the readiness of a missionary candidate.
The authors focus on three areas of consideration: character, conviction, and competency. Each part presents critical areas that candidates must wrestle with before launching onto the field. Each chapter is saturated in Scripture and wisdom from two seasoned missionaries who have learned timely lessons that will serve readers well.
The Path to Being a Missionary is a tool that should be utilized by local churches to identify, assess, and send Christians onto the field to help fulfill Christ’s mandate to make disciples of all nations. It is packed with encouragement and sober-minded tools of assessment that will help encourage and equip the next generation of missionaries!
